Don’t skimp on maintenance

Last winter saw a tenfold surge in the number of breakdowns reported, according to AA Insurance.

Meanwhile, Post Office Car Insurance warned that more than half of British motorists cut corners on maintenance to save money – which could put their safety at risk during severe weather conditions.

A scary 13% of drivers let their tyres wear down more than usual, while 11% fitted cheaper or second-hand tyres. A further 7% even ignored a message or warning light on the dashboard.

“Car safety is one area where cutting corners could cost you more than you bargained for, especially when bad winter weather sets in,” says Richard Pennant-Jones, head of car insurance for the Post Office.

“Failing to maintain your car could even result in it being deemed un-roadworthy and therefore invalidate your insurance,” he warns.
